Ingredient Notes

These simple ingredients can be found in your local grocery store. Quantities can be found in the recipe card at the end of this post.

  • Feta Cheese Block - use a block of full fat feta since it's stored in brine which produces better flavor than crumbled feta cheese.
  • Plain Thick Greek Yogurt - can substitute sour cream if desired, but plain Greek yogurt adds a tangy taste. Be sure to choose a thick type for best results.
  • Garlic Clove - mince the garlic or let the food processor do it for you.
  • Cracked Black Pepper - freshly cracked pepper makes a difference in taste, but you can use regular pepper if desired.
  • Kosher Salt - can use table salt if desired, or you can omit the salt altogether.
  • Extra Virgin Olive Oil - once the olive oil is blended with the dip, it makes everything come together with a smooth finish.
  • Pitted Kalamata Olives - these Greek olives add incredible flavor and saltiness, but you can omit them or substitute green olives instead.
  • Fresh Parsley- chop it finely and sprinkle around the side for a creative garnish.
  • Red Pepper Flakes - crush flakes into tiny pieces with the back of a spoon for a burst of flavor.
  • Pita Bread - warm it up in the oven or microwave for a few minutes before serving. Cut into small triangles for dipping.

Customize It!

  • Sprinkle feta dip with sesame seeds, everything bagel seasoning, red peppers, pine nuts or fresh rosemary.
  • Top with a squeeze of fresh lemon and lemon zest.
  • Caramelized onion and fresh herbs also make a great topper. You can also try capers, sun-dried tomatoes and honey for a sweet finish.
  • Sour cream can be substituted for plain Greek yogurt. Both create a delicious dip, so you can't go wrong either way.
  • Need a dip with honey instead? Try this Whipped Feta Dip with Honey for a sweet twist.

Tips for Success

  • Choose quality ingredients: A high quality feta cheese and extra virgin olive oil is essential to creating exceptional flavor.
  • Make sure not to over-blend: you may be tempted to over process the dip, but doing so can break down the cheese and make it runny.
  • Add yogurt a little at a time: you may not need the entire 6 ounces of yogurt if it is too thin. To avoid a thin dip, add yogurt in teaspoons until you get the consistency desired.
  • Don't Skimp on Toppings: be as creative as you like, but make sure there are enough toppings to dunk lots of chips!

Recipe FAQs

Can I use crumbled feta cheese instead?

I don't recommend crumbled cheese in this recipe because it's usually very dry and won't pulse to a smooth consistency. A block of full fat feta stored in brine is a better choice. Sheep's milk feta is the creamiest if you can find it, but any type will do.

What can I use instead of Greek yogurt?

Sour cream is the best substitute for Greek yogurt and you can use it as an alternative. However, plain Greek yogurt generally has a lower fat content and less calories than full fat sour cream.

What type of olive oil is best for this recipe?

Extra virgin olive oil is the best choice for whipped feta. Look for a high quality oil that is robust in flavor which is also cold pressed and organic. Gaia Oliva (ad) is a premium olive oil and a great choice from the Aegean region.

Storage Tips

Make Ahead: Assemble recipe as directed and store in the refrigerator for up to 1 day before serving. Add toppings just before it's ready to serve.

Leftovers: Keep feta dip in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Make sure you store it without the toppings and add those later.

Leftover dip will thicken as it sits in the fridge. It's best when allowed to sit at room temperature before serving. Freezing is not recommended.

Equipment

Ingredients

Whipped Feta Dip

  • 8 ounces feta cheese (purchase it in a block, not crumbled)
  • 6 ounces whole milk plain Greek yogurt (purchase a thick brand)
  • 1 garlic clove (minced)
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • teaspoon coarse kosher salt
  • 2 Tablespoons olive oil (extra virgin)

Toppings & Dippers

  • 1 Tablespoon olive oil (extra virgin)
  • ½ cup kalamata olives (pitted)
  • 1 Tablespoon fresh parsley (chopped)
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (crushed)
  • ¼ teaspoon cracked black pepper
  • 8 ounces pita bread (cut into triangles)

Instructions

  • Crumble the feta off the block and place in a food processor. Add the garlic, pepper and salt.
  • Blend for 2 minutes, adding the Greek yogurt a little at a time until you get a thick and creamy consistency. (The dip will still be slightly grainy from the crumbly texture of the feta.)
  • Drizzle 2 tablespoons of olive oil into the food processor. Blend for 1 minute just until combined. (If you want it smoother, process longer, but be careful not to blend too much or it will become runny.)
  • Spread the dip into your serving dish. Swirl it with a knife in a circular motion to make dents for the olive oil.
  • Drizzle dip with 1 Tablespoon of the olive oil, then top with kalamata olives, parsley, crushed red pepper flakes, and cracked black pepper on one side of the dish.
  • Serve with warm pita bread that has been heated in the oven or microwave for a few seconds.

Notes

    • Add yogurt a little at a time: you may not need the entire 6 ounces of yogurt if the dip starts to be too thin. To avoid a runny dip, add yogurt in teaspoons until you get the consistency desired.
    • Want an extra-thick dip? Add 4 ounces of softened cream cheese to the food processor and blend until creamy, or use full fat sour cream instead of yogurt.
    • Make sure not to over-blend: you may be tempted to over process the dip, but doing so can break down the cheese and make it runny.
    • Choose quality ingredients: A high quality feta cheese and extra virgin olive oil is essential to creating exceptional flavor.
    • Don't Skimp on Toppings: be as creative as you like, but make sure there are enough toppings to dunk lots of chips!
    • Make Ahead: Assemble recipe as directed and store in the refrigerator for up to 1 day before serving. Add toppings right before it's ready to serve.
    • Leftovers: Keep feta dip in the refrigerator in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Make sure you store it without the toppings and add those later.

This was incredibly delicious and easy. It made a great base for crostini with an assortment of toppings. I plan to use it as an accompaniment for grilled lamb and chicken. Positively addictive.

This dip is so good I make it all the time. I like to drizzle it with honey and top with pine nuts but the Greek olives are great too.
